Jason Isbell | Something More Than Free

More inspired, common man narratives from the connoisseur’s choice of alt-country singer songwriters.
You get what you came for on Isbell’s latest...and that’s no bad thing. Produced once again by go-to Nashville producer Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Shooter Jennings) Something More Than Free follows 2013’s successful Southeastern, capitalising on that partnership’s mix of Mellancamp-imbdued plain song and porch light charm.
These are deeply personal songs, following Isbell’s self-declared period of rehabilitation. How To Forget, 24 Frames, If It Takes A Lifetime and in particular The Life You Chose cascade and flow via an honest (never preachy) sense of acceptance. This is post-trauma music in the best sense. Analogies to hard toil abound “I don’t think on why I’m here or where it hurts, I’m just lucky to have the work” as he proclaims on the title track.
The work of an expert craftsman, at the peak of his powers.
